Montessori and games

While working on a paper I came across the idea of exploring the educational method by Maria Montessori to see how she talked about games.
To my surprise, she does much more than that: her method has indeed lot to share with game design! Strange to hear, but two elements are worth noticing:
  1. From free playing teachers can observe the nature of children in a unique way, so spontaneous action, when directed to a purpose, should not be hindered
  2. Games are educational when they are directed, they have a goal - hence the emphasis on rules and games - as opposite to free playing.
Those interested can get the full text of The Montessori Method online.
(Indeed, I was not the first to find this link! David McDonough was one, ... and the designer of SimCity)
